How to come to Koh Samui ?

Most people will travel from Bangkok to Koh Samui, however, there are also direct international flights from Singapore, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Penang arriving in Koh Samui. Here we will draft an overview of the possibilities how to visit us.

In most cases, the easiest way is to fly direct from Bangkok, Singapore or Hong Kong to Koh Samui with Bangkok Airways. Unfortunately, Bangkok Airways is also the owner of Koh Samui Airport, and they are not keen to give up their monopoly, which results in relatively  high rates. On the other hand, you will save a lot of time using them as they have a flight every hour and you don't need to travel half a day from Surat Thani.  Como Resort is a 10 minutes drive away from the airport.  (Don't worry, you will not hear the planes !!!!)  If you use Bangkok Air, we can easily arrange an airport transfer (it is almost impossible to arrange this if you come from Surat Thani as you will have no idea when you will arrive and at which pier).

If you travel from Malaysia, you can catch a direct flight from Kuala Lumpur (Berjaya Air) or Penang (Firefly)

A cheaper alternative is to fly to Surat Thani, and from there to go to Koh Samui. Surat Thani Airport is around one hour away from Donsak, the place where most of the ferries to Koh Samui leave. From Donsak, it is a nice boat trip from approx. 1,5 hours to Nathong, the "capital" of Koh Samui.

Currently, the following airlines fly to Surat Thani :

Thai Airways, Thailand's national airline : cheaper as Bangkok Airlines, excellent service, but still more expensive as the budget airlines below.

Thai Air Asia is the Ryan Air from South East Asia. Especially if you book long before, you can find some really interesting deals which make you forget the inconvenience from traveling from Surat Thani.

Thai Airways daughter Orient Thai (One-Two-Go) is another budget airline with daily flights from Bangkok.

Whatever airline you choose, you will have to go from Surat Thani Airport to Koh Samui. Tickets to Koh Samui can be bought at the airport. Please check if the company can bring you to Como Resort (normally, they do) It will be cheaper as taking a separate taxi from the pier ! A very reliable company to do this is Seatran.

A not so bad alternative for the plane is to come by night train. The beds in the train are quite comfortable, it is cheap and as you sleep in the train, you save a hotel room ;-) Be sure that you book at least second class, sleeper with airco. First class costs the double, but  the only advantage is that you have a private cabin for 2 persons. Important if you are not French or Thai : the trains have only a so called "French" toilet (squatting toilet) , so better be prepared....  Unfortunately, tickets can not be booked online, so the first thing you have to do when you arrive in Bangkok is to hurry to the train station or a reliable travel agent to buy a joint ticket to Koh Samui (including the transfer from Surat Thani train station to Koh Samui). Especially in high season, it can be very difficult to obtain a ticket for your preferred train ! If you Google a bit around, you will find some travel agents and websites who claim that they can book tickets for you. We suggest only to use these services when you have really no time to book by yourself in Bangkok, unless you know the agent of course. It is also said that you can book directly from the Railways by sending an email to passenger-ser@railway.co.th or fax + 66 2 225 6068 and collect your tickets at the train station,  but we are not 100 % sure that it works all the time ;-(

The bus : only recommended to masochists ...  Although we strongly advise the  bus to travel for short distances at daytime (= very cheap, frequent connections to almost everywhere and you have the chance to see something from the landscape), the busses from Bangkok to Koh Samui are a nightmare (that's why they run at night btw) If you absolutely want to try out by yourself, book a ticket at any travel agent in Bangkok and refuse anything which is less as "VIP class" (which means that you probably will pay more as for the train where you have a bed) Busses normally leave around 20.00 Hr at the Southern  Bus terminal in Bangkok. The only advantage is that the bus is faster than the train, and you don't have to carry your luggage to the ferry (the bus takes the ferry)

If you have a lot of time, we feel that far the best way to travel in Thailand is by car. Once you are out of Bangkok, you will find very few traffic on the roads (which are quite good over here). You can rent a car in Bangkok by Avis or Budget.  If driving on the left is not your thing, you can hire a minivan with an English speaking driver for approx. thb 3000 a day (excl. gasoline and driver's accommodation if necessary)  Please contact us for more information.
